Vibe coding

Building software by describing what you want to an AI and accepting its output without reading the code, relying on behaviour rather than inspection.

Coined by Andrej Karpathy in February 2025, vibe coding means 'fully giving in to the vibes': you prompt, run, paste errors back, and never really look at the code. It works for prototypes and throwaway tools and breaks down when correctness, security or maintenance matter. Y Combinator reported a quarter of its W25 batch had codebases ~95% AI-generated; Stack Overflow's 2025 survey found 72% of developers say vibe coding is not part of their professional work.
